Optlo: the Zendesk alternative
Zendesk scales to the largest support teams. Optlo keeps the AI, and its bill, on your own provider account.
Last updated July 2026
Zendesk is the enterprise incumbent in customer support: a powerful, omnichannel help desk with a huge integration marketplace. Its AI agents resolve customer questions across channels, and it scales to the largest support teams.
Zendesk charges per agent for Suite plans and bills its AI agents per automated resolution, on top. Optlo runs on your own AI provider account (OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google Gemini), so you pay for tokens directly with no markup and no per-resolution fee, starting at a fraction of the price.
If you need enterprise-grade omnichannel support with a deep integration marketplace, Zendesk is hard to beat. If you want to own your AI and its cost, and shape the agent's prompt and workflow, Optlo is built for that.

01Pricing model
Per-agent plans plus per-resolution AI
Zendesk's published rates are per agent, from $55/agent/mo on Suite Team up to $115/agent/mo on Suite Professional, with the Copilot assist add-on at $50/agent/mo. Its AI agents are then billed per automated resolution. Every part of that scales with your team and your volume, and the underlying model cost is baked in rather than shown.
Optlo separates those costs. You pay an Optlo plan from $16/mo billed annually, and your AI provider bills you directly for the tokens used. There's no per-resolution markup, and you can watch usage in your provider dashboard and tune it. At volume this usually lands well below per-agent and per-resolution pricing.
21.2×more expensive on Zendesk, $1,329 more every month at the same volume
- Suite agents$345
- AI resolutions$1,050
- Optlo Growth plan$49
- Your AI tokens, at cost$17
How this is calculated
1,000 conversations a month, 70% resolved by AI, 3 seats, billed annually, with OpenAI GPT-5.4 Mini on your own key.
Estimate only. Zendesk figures use public list prices; Optlo's AI line is your provider's token cost, not a markup.
Run your own numbers02Model choice
Zendesk picks the model. On Optlo you do.
Zendesk's AI runs on a model it manages for you. Simple questions and hard ones get the same model, and new releases reach you when Zendesk adopts them.
17 modelsfrom OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, a different one at each workflow step if you like
Optlo puts the key in your hands and the model choice with it. Run something cheap and fast on triage, reserve a stronger model for the questions that need it, and do both inside one workflow. When OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google ships something better, you move the day it lands.
03Control
Bot builder ceilings vs an editable prompt
Zendesk lets you configure its AI agents and build bot flows and triggers. That covers common cases, but you can only go as far as the bot builder exposes.
Optlo hands you a preset and then gets out of the way. The system prompt is a text field you edit, and each step of the workflow (what the agent asks, when it looks something up, when it escalates) is yours to rearrange. Change one line or rebuild the whole path.
04Trade-offs
Where Zendesk is the stronger choice
Zendesk is built for scale. If you need enterprise omnichannel support across voice, social, and messaging, a vast marketplace of integrations, and deep reporting and administration, it's hard to match. Optlo covers email and web with a shared inbox and human handoff. It competes on what the AI costs and who owns it, not on enterprise breadth.
Optlo is stronger at
- Owning the AI account and paying providers at cost
- Predictable cost as conversation volume grows
- Choosing and mixing models per workflow step
- Editing the system prompt and every workflow step
Zendesk is stronger at
- Omnichannel support across voice, social and messaging
- An extensive third-party integration marketplace
- Deep reporting and administration for large teams
- Enterprise workflows and compliance tooling
05Switching
Switching from Zendesk to Optlo
Zendesk is the bigger system to unpick, so most teams don't rip it out on day one. They move web chat and email deflection to Optlo first and keep ticketing where it is until the answers prove out.
Point Optlo at your Guide help center
Optlo crawls your public site and help center, following your sitemap, so the Zendesk Guide articles behind your existing AI agent train your Optlo agent too. Add notes for anything undocumented.
Connect your AI provider key
Create a key in OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google, paste it in, and pick your model. Your AI cost moves onto your provider account, where you can see it per conversation instead of per automated resolution.
Run it alongside Zendesk
Optlo installs as a script tag, so it can sit on a staging site or one section of your site while Zendesk keeps running. Compare answers on real questions before you change anything customer-facing.
Move deflection over, then decide on the rest
Point web chat and support email at Optlo and use the shared inbox for human handoff. Teams that need Zendesk's ticketing and extra channels keep them; teams that don't retire the seats.
What doesn't come across: Zendesk ticket history, SLAs and routing rules, phone and social channels, and marketplace apps stay in Zendesk. Optlo covers email and web chat, so scope the switch to those two first.

Is Optlo cheaper than Zendesk?
Usually, yes, especially as your team and volume grow. Zendesk's per-agent plans plus per-resolution AI add up quickly, while Optlo is a plan plus paying your provider directly at cost. The Optlo cost calculator will compare the two at your own numbers.
Can I bring my own OpenAI or Anthropic key to Zendesk?
No. Zendesk manages the AI behind its agents and Copilot. Optlo is built around bringing your own provider key, so you pay OpenAI, Anthropic, or Gemini directly with no markup.
Is Zendesk a full help desk?
Yes. Zendesk is an enterprise-grade omnichannel help desk. Optlo is lighter, focused on an AI agent across email and web with a shared inbox and human handoff, and on owning your AI.
How hard is it to switch from Zendesk to Optlo?
Optlo installs as a messenger widget, connects to your AI key, and trains on your existing site, docs, and help center. Setup is much lighter than a full Zendesk migration, so most teams are live quickly.
