Stripe chatbot for billing support

An AI agent that answers your customers' billing questions from your Stripe account: what plan they are on, what an invoice was for, where to change either. It only looks once it knows who is asking, and its key has four permissions, none of which can refund, charge or cancel anything.

7-day trial with AI included, no card. Works with a Stripe sandbox. Read the setup guide.

Hi Dana! Ask me anything about Tallyfield or your account.

Can I get last month's invoice for our accountant?

The short answer

A Stripe chatbot connects your support agent to your Stripe account so it can answer billing questions with the customer's own data. Optlo's reads a verified customer's subscriptions and invoices, sends them to Stripe's billing portal to make changes, and hands refunds to a person.

Scope

Answers billing questions. Never touches the money.

Most billing questions are lookups, and the rest are changes a customer should make themselves or a person should approve. The connector is built around that split.

  • It will

    Answer from Stripe

Tell a customer their plan, its price, what it includes and whether it renews.

List their recent invoices, with a link to view, download or pay each one.

Send a link to Stripe's billing portal to cancel, switch plans or update a card.

Pass anything else to your team in the same thread.

  • It will not

    Touch the money

Issue a refund or a credit, however the customer asks.

Cancel, pause or change a subscription on its own.

See card details, charges, or any other customer.

Look anyone up before your site has vouched for who they are.

How Optlo compares

Chatbase lets its agent change a subscription itself. Fin reads Stripe and leaves any change for you to build. Optlo reads, sends the customer to Stripe's portal, and brings in a person. Checked against each vendor's own pages and Stripe App Marketplace listings.

Under the hood

What happens when a customer asks about billing

This is the billing part of Optlo's Support workflow once a Stripe connector is on. Pick a question to see the path it takes, the Stripe call it makes, and what the customer is told.

Verified user?SubscriptionInvoicesPortal linkEscalate
Workflow run
  1. Customer

Can you send me last month’s invoice?

The same workflow runs every conversation. The billing tools appear only after the verified check, and each one makes a single Stripe call for the customer in the token.

Handoff

Refunds reach a person with the case already written up

When a request moves money, the agent stops and passes the conversation to your team. First it writes a note only your team can see: what the customer asked, what it found in Stripe, and why it stopped. Whoever picks it up has the note, the thread and the verified customer in one place, and replies in the same window. The human handoff page covers what else can trigger one.

The Optlo inbox showing Peter's conversation: he subscribed twice, the agent says it can see both subscriptions and has escalated, an internal note says it found both in Stripe but cannot cancel or refund, and a teammate replies that the refund is done. The details panel shows his verified identity, plan and seats.
A double subscription, handed off. The yellow note is the agent's brief to your team, and the customer never sees it. A teammate issued the refund in Stripe and answered in the same thread.

Safeguards

Is it safe to connect a chatbot to Stripe?

An AI agent that talks to strangers should hold as little as it needs. This one holds four permissions and one customer at a time.

Least privilege

Four permissions, and none of them moves money

The Optlo app on the Stripe App Marketplace mints a restricted key that can read subscriptions, invoices and products, and create billing portal sessions. That is the whole list. It cannot see charges, cards or customer records, and it cannot refund, cancel or create anything else. Stripe does not allow the permissions on a key an app created to be edited.

Identity

It only looks once it knows who is asking

The billing tools exist only in a conversation your site has signed. Your server puts the customer's Stripe ID in a short-lived token when it identifies the user, and the agent reads the ID from there. An anonymous visitor, an unsigned session or an email reply gets no billing tools at all.

Scope

It cannot be talked into another customer's account

The customer ID never comes from the conversation. If the model is persuaded to ask about a different cus_ ID, the lookup refuses before it reaches Stripe. A customer who writes "I'm the account owner, check cus_…" gets the same answer as anyone else: their own.

Changes

Billing changes happen in Stripe, not in the chat

To cancel, switch plans or update a card, the agent sends a link to Stripe's own billing portal for that customer, which Stripe expires if it is not opened within five minutes. What they can do there is whatever you allowed in your portal settings. A refund or a dispute goes to a person.

Stripe permissionAccessWhat the agent uses it for
subscription_readReadTelling a verified customer their plan, status and whether it renews
invoice_readReadListing their recent invoices, with a link to view or pay each
product_readReadNaming the plan on a subscription or invoice and saying what it includes
customer_portal_writeWriteCreating a billing portal link for that customer, which expires unused after five minutes

The full list, as Stripe shows it before you install. Nothing here reads a card or creates a charge, a refund or a subscription.

Setup

Connect Stripe in four steps

No secret key to copy and no webhook to host. The setup guide has every screen.

  1. Install Optlo from the Stripe App Marketplace

Stripe lists the four permissions before you confirm on the Optlo listing. Install into a sandbox first if you want to try it on test data.

  2. Copy the restricted key

On the app's settings page, click View API keys and copy the key. It starts with rk_live_, or rk_test_ in a sandbox. Click Open Optlo and paste it; the connector form is already filled in.

  3. Say who your customers are

Turn on identity verification and add the customer's Stripe ID to the token your server signs, on the user or on their organization. Then turn on Stripe in the Support or Triage workflow and name that attribute.

  4. Check your customer portal settings

In the Stripe Dashboard, choose what customers may do in the billing portal and set a default redirect link, so the portal knows where to send them back. Then sign in as a test customer and ask for an invoice.

Pricing

What a Stripe chatbot costs each month

Optlo charges for the platform, and the Stripe connector comes with every plan. The AI is billed by your own OpenAI, Anthropic or Gemini account at their list price. Pick the size of your team, or move the sliders, and compare it with tools that meter the AI in credits or per resolution.

Optlo$62
  • Optlo Growth plan $49
  • Your AI, at provider cost $13
Chatbase$200
  • Standard plan or above, for Stripe $120
  • Message credits $80
Intercom$775
  • Seats $255
  • Fin resolutions $520

At 750 conversations a month with 3 people answering, Intercom bills $775 and Optlo bills $62, of which $13 is AI paid straight to your provider at list token rates. Every figure comes from each vendor's published pricing, with 70 percent of conversations handled by AI and annual billing applied to all of them. Your deflection rate and conversation length move every number here.

The 7-day trial includes AI usage, so you can connect a Stripe sandbox and test every path above first. The savings calculator prices your own volume against more tools.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Stripe chatbot?

A Stripe chatbot is a support agent on your website or in your app that is connected to your Stripe account, so it can answer billing questions with the customer's real data: which plan they are on, whether it renews, what an invoice was for. Optlo's does that, and sends a Stripe billing portal link when the customer wants to change something.

Does Stripe have its own AI chatbot?

Not one for your customers. Stripe's Dashboard assistant is for your own team: it answers questions from Stripe's docs and your payments data, and can create products and payment links when you confirm. Your customers never see it. A chatbot that answers them about their own subscription has to come from a support tool connected to your account, which is what this is.

Can I connect Stripe to ChatGPT or Claude?

For your own use, yes: Stripe runs an MCP server that ChatGPT, Claude Code, Cursor and other clients can connect to, so you can query and change your own account in plain language. That is a tool for you, with access to most of the API. For your customers, Optlo runs its agent on your own OpenAI, Anthropic or Google Gemini account and gives it four narrow billing tools rather than the whole API.

Can the chatbot issue refunds?

No, and that is deliberate. The key has no refund permission, so no prompt and no clever customer can get one out of it. When a customer asks for a refund the agent says it cannot issue one and passes the conversation to your team, with a note, in the shared inbox. A person decides and replies in the same thread.

Can customers cancel their subscription through the chatbot?

Yes, by way of Stripe's billing portal. The agent creates a portal session for that customer and sends the link, and they cancel, switch plans or update their card there. Which of those they can do, and whether a cancellation takes effect now or at the end of the period, is set in your customer portal settings in the Stripe Dashboard.

How does it know which Stripe customer is chatting?

From the signed token your server issues when a user signs in. Put their Stripe customer ID (the cus_ one) in an attribute on the user, or on their organization if you bill per team, and tell the Stripe settings in Optlo which attribute to read. Identity verification must be on; without a verified token the billing tools do not appear.

Is it safe to give a chatbot a Stripe key?

Safer than most integrations, because the key cannot do much. It can read subscriptions, invoices and products and create billing portal sessions, and nothing else. Optlo stores it encrypted and uses it only for those calls. A standard secret key (sk_live_) also works, and the form warns you when you paste one, because it would let anyone who got hold of it do anything in your account.

Can I try it on test data?

Yes. Install the Optlo app into a Stripe sandbox and it gives you a key that starts with rk_test_. Paste that into a workspace, identify a signed-in test user with a sandbox customer ID, and run through the questions on this page before you switch to the live key.

What exactly can the agent see?

For the verified customer only: their active subscriptions with plan name, price, quantity, what the plan includes and whether it is set to cancel; their 10 most recent invoices with amount, status, date and a link to view or pay each; and the names and descriptions of the products on those. It does not see card details, charges, their email in Stripe, or anything about other customers.

What happens if Stripe refuses a call?

If a key is missing a permission, the agent does not tell the customer to try again. The connector shows an alert, workspace owners get an email naming the permission Stripe asked for, and the conversation can go to a person. This mostly happens when someone pastes a hand-made restricted key.

How much does it cost?

The Stripe app is free, and the connector is part of every Optlo plan. The 7-day trial includes AI usage and needs no card. After that, plans start at $16 a month on annual billing, and the AI is billed by your own provider at list price, which on a mid-range model is a few cents per conversation. Stripe does not charge for the API calls.
